Newgrange Spirals

The above spirals are found at the entrance to the Newgrange site near Dublin. These spirals, though used in Celtic jewelry (we carry a variety of such jewelry in the Wandering Angus shop) predate the Celts by a considerable amount of time. In fact, the Newgrange site predates all other human construction (yes, even the pyramids). Carbon dating places the construction of the site around 2500 B.C. Why was it constructed? There are several explanations. Three of those include being a burial mound, being a sun dial of sorts, and being a way to create a union between Father Sun and Mother Earth. No one knows the meaning of these spirals either. One explantion is that the circles represent lengths of the days (large perimeter ones summer and small inner ones winter. Regardless of their meaning, these Newgrange spirals represent a link across the ages and have a certain appeal today.
